Wow! China is a really big country! We've had to study our geography to figure out where we're going. We will be flying tonight to Guangzhou. Guangzhou is a really big modern city in the southern part of China on the East Coast. Guangzhou we're familiar with - traveled there a couple of times, most recently for Lydia's adoption. Mike likes Guangzhou because he can use his Cantonese there (oh, yes, and there's lots of shopping too! A big plus for my baring hunting husband who loves to shop.) I myself am pretty comfortable in Guangzhou - esp. since they have Starbucks there :). After a day of rest, we'll be flying to Gansu Province to the city of Lanzhou - it's about 1,125 miles. This is where we had to do a little research. Gansu is one of the poorest provinces in China. It's on the Northern border of China, bordering Mongolia. Supposedly the area is very arid. It's along the Silk Road and the Yellow River. We're packing two sets of clothes. One for the hot/humid Guangzhou weather, and another for the cooler weather in Gansu. We'll be flying into the capital of Gansu called Lanzhou. That's where we'll be meeting Kari. Kari's actually from a smaller city called Wuwei (smaller meaning population 1.9 million). We're not sure if we'll be able to visit there, but we hope so! It'll be interesting to see a differnt side of China we're not as familiar with.
